A cross party delegation from both Newry & Mourne and Down District councils met with the Minister for the Environment Edwin Poots, to make the case for the ward of Seaview to be reinstated in the proposals for the new council district of Newry, Mourne and Down.

The Boundary Commissioner has proposed that the town of Warrenpoint will have only one ward, with 40 percent of it's electorate moving into the new rural wards of Rostrevor and Burren.

The law imposed a duty on the Commissioner, in determining the number and boundaries of wards within a district, to have regard to matters of size, population and physical diversity of the district and the desirability to have proper representation of the urban and rural electorate within the district.

This has not happened in Warrenpoint where the urban/rural balance has been disproportionately altered. The case to reinstate Seaview has unanimous support from both councils and all political parties.

Only 3 settlements, Newry, Warrenpoint & Kilkeel in the Newry & Mourne Council area are classified as urban. In Crotlieve the urban area of Warrenpoint is currently 28%, the new ward proposals reduces that to just 17%, and denies 1700 electorate suitable representation.
The case for an additional ward in Warrenpoint has been made, the ward has been delineated, it is a special case in NI, attracts widespread support, and not to include the new ward will have a severe negative impact.
